NOTICE OF RULE DEVELOPMENT
RULE TITLE: Cellular Telephones and Other Wireless Communication Devices.
RULE NUMBER: Policy 5.183.
SUBJECT AREA TO BE ADDRESSED: The amended policy provides that students may possess cellular phones and wireless communication devices on school property and school-sponsored transportation, provided such devices are not visible, used, or activated, and are kept in the “off” position throughout the instructional school day and while on school-sponsored transportation. Students are required to keep their phones stored in a vehicle, locker, purse, backpack, or other non-visible secure location during the day and while on school-sponsored transportation.
PURPOSE AND EFFECT: This policy is to implement the provisions of Section 1006.07(2) (f), Florida Statutes, which permits students to possess wireless communication devices on school property and authorizes the School Board to regulate the possession and use of such devices.

PUBLIC HEARING NOTICE: Development of the proposed rule is anticipated to be considered at the School Board's Special Meeting on Policies on February 22, 2012, anticipated to begin at 2:00 p.m. (an approximate time, as the actual start time may vary earlier or later) in the Board Chambers at 3300 Forest Hill Blvd., West Palm Beach, Fla. AGENDA: An agenda will be available by February 15, 2012 on the District's Web site. Pursuant to the provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act, any person requiring special accommodations to participate in this hearing is asked to advise the agency at least 48 hours in advance by contacting the Board clerk at 434-8139. A person may submit written comments (12 copies) about the proposed action to the clerk no later than the time of the public hearing. This hearing is open to the public.
