Policy 1.012Responsibilities of the Superintendent of Schools

  1. The superintendent shall be responsible for the administration and management of the entire school district according to the appropriate Florida statutes, state board of education rules, and the adopted policies of the school board. The superintendent shall keep the school board informed regarding all phases of the district.

  2. Supervision of instruction in the district is vested in the superintendent, who serves as secretary and executive officer of the school board and recommends to the school board any action needed. The approval of a policy by the school board is a mandate for the administration of such policy. When possible, all matters coming before the school board shall first be presented to the superintendent for inclusion on the agenda. The superintendent shall inform schools and departments regarding board actions pertinent to the school or department.

  3. In case of emergency, the superintendent may request an emergency waiver of these policies pursuant to Florida law and the school board's waiver policy.

  4. The superintendent may, in case of an emergency, close any or all schools. The school board shall be informed of any event that required the closing of a school.

  5. The superintendent shall issue directives as necessary to carry out the foregoing responsibilities.
